LAB 2-3 Configuring Hostname and Banner

1) Configuring HOSTNAME
Assigning name to a Router helps us identify a Router. The factory-assigned default name is “Router” Router> enable Router# configure terminal Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z. Router(config)# hostname NWHEAVEN NWHEAVEN(config)# exit NWHEAVEN#

TIP: You may remove the Router name and set it to the default by issuing the command, “no hostname NWHEAVEN”

NWHEAVEN(config)# no hostname NWHEAVEN Router(config)# exit Router#
2) Configuring Banner

Cisco routers and switches can display a variety of banners depending on what a router or switch administrator is doing. A banner is simply some text that appears on the screen for the user. One can configure a router or switch to display multiple banners, some before login and some after.

MOTD BANNER

The MOTD banner is displayed on all terminals and is useful for sending messages that affect all users. NWHEAVEN> enable NWHEAVEN# configure terminal Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z. NWHEAVEN(config)# banner ? LINE                          c banner-text c, where 'c' is a delimiting character exec                             Set EXEC process creation banner incoming                   Set incoming terminal line banner login                           Set login banner motd                          Set Message of the Day banner prompt-timeout      Set Message for login authentication timeout slip-ppp                     Set Message for SLIP/PPP

$ is known as a delimiting character. The delimiting character must surround the banner message and can be any character so long as it is not a character used within the body of the message.

MOTD BANNER

The login banner displays before the username and password login prompts. NWHEAVEN>enable NWHEAVEN#configure terminal Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z. NWHEAVEN(config)# banner login # Authorized Personnel Only! # NWHEAVEN(config)#end NWHEAVEN#

TIP: Use the no banner login command to disable the login banner. The MOTD banner displays before the login banner.
